Invisible Shadows #1

by Tony Newell

The first major unexplained situation that happened to me was when I was 11yrs old. The sportsmaster and teacher at my school (Mr.Stevens) took the class every Friday for a friendly game of soccer at the local sports field, about 2 miles from our school. He would pre-select the two teams before the game and referee the match.

The dressing rooms were quite a distance from the pitch, apprx. a 5 min. walk. This particular Friday after we had changed into our respective team attire, we walked to our allocated pitch and commenced the game. During the first half I was on the receiving end of a tackle which ended my contribution to the game. (Mr.Stevens) suggested that I returned to the dressing room and rest my leg until we returned to the school.

On arriving back at the dressing room, I sat down on the bench and examined my swollen calf muscle. The room was empty and quite, when I heard footsteps approaching towards the door.(Mr. Stevens) came in and asked how I was, sat down next to me and looked at the leg. I told him he should not have worried and asked if it was half-time in the game. He said it was and hoped that I would be fit enough for the game next Friday, having showed me the line-up from the book he kept inside his pocket. My position was to be left wing if fit enough, I normally played left half, this indeed was a team promotion. He said farewell and returned to the game.

One hour later the teams returned to the dressing room, (Mr. Stevens) once again asked how my leg was, and again I thanked him for his concern on returning to the dressing room at half-time. Mystified he asked me to explain what I was talking about. The boys on the team thought that I was hallucinating and denied (Mr.Stevens) had returned to the dressing room during the game. According to everyone he remained on the pitch at half-time distributing oranges to the team.

On the school bus I noticed his mystified look, and once back at the school he had a quite word regarding the days events. I mentioned to him about the conversation we had, the team for next Friday. This completely shocked him, and he asked how I knew this, because during the half-time break he was writing down his possible selection and team positions for the following week, myself if fit playing left wing.

I have never been able to understand how this happened and why. Since it occured many years ago it is as vivid in my mind as if it happened yesterday.

I never made the team on the following week. (Mr. Stevens) remained at the school for a further 2yrs, then left to take up a position in Gloucestershire, England.
